ADOPTION

Friends Of Feather's Rescue main goal is to find loving, permanent homes for some birds that come to our organization. We endeavor to provide them with the best possible care while with Friends Of Feathers Rescue, but nothing is as good for the birds as a secure forever home and family.

Adoption of a bird in need is a very big decision; it will affect everyone in the household and the bird a great deal. Welcoming a bird into a home can mean a real change in your lifestyle - more than many people expect. In fact, this is one of the main reasons why parrots lose their homes: The owners just weren't aware of how much responsibility, time and commitment is involved in having a companion parrot.

In an effort to ensure the birds that come to Friends Of Feathers Rescue find a good and stable home with an adoptive family, we have a very strict screening process for anyone wishing to adopt. This is to help us determine if the new owners and the chosen bird are a good match and the potential new owner is fully aware of all that is involved in caring for a pet parrot. Our hope is that the adoptive home will be a permanent forever home.

'' We do not do same day adoptions.''

Who can adopt a parrot from Friends Of Feathers Rescue ?

We have strict guidelines and principles, but each application for adoption is assessed individually.

This means that in each case the decision is determined according to what is best for the BIRD.

What are the conditions of adoption?

Every adoptive home must agree that if ever they are not able to keep the bird - for whatever reasons - they will return the bird to the care of Friends Of Feathers Rescue . Under no circumstances can a bird adopted from Friends Of Feathers be sold or given away; the bird must come back to our shelter. We will then determine whether it is best for that bird to be placed in a new home or to live out their life at one of our sanctuarys.

Applicants must also agree that the bird they are adopting will NOT be used for breeding. Friends Of Feathers Rescue objective is to help control the number of unwanted birds, and consequently this means that our birds will not breed.

Anyone adopting a bird from Friends of Feathers Rescue must also agree to Many follow-up visits from us ; one that is prearranged with the applicant, and the rest are  unannounced. These visits are to help the new owner with any questions they might have about their adopted parrot and his or her care, and to ensure that the standard of care they provide for the bird is consistent. If during one of these visits the new owner feels unable to care for the bird properly, Friends Of Feathers Rescue  will either offer them help or support to overcome difficulties or take the bird back to the shelter if the issues can't be resolved.

Also, if at either of these visits the level of care the adopter has provided for the bird is unaccapteble, We will determine if problems can be resolved; if not,

Friends Of Feathers Rescue retains the right to retrieve the bird and cancel any adoption agreement.

How do I adopt a bird from Friends Of Feathers?

Application: Anyone interested in adopting a bird from US must first fill out an application form. The application form asks standard personal information such as the adoptor's occupation, schedule and lifestyle. We also ask about the adopter's current knowledge about parrots and their care. From the information provided, WE are better able to determine what would be the best possible match for the bird and the adopter.

References: Friends Of Feathers Rescue requires current references; the potential adopter must agree to allow Friends of Feathers Rescue to contact all of those provided.

Required Learning: Friends Of Feathers Rescue requires that anyone adopting a bird from our organization learn about that species of parrot. Before they are able to take the bird home, the potential adopter will be required to answer several questions about that bird and their care, such as diet requirements and behavioral issues. To help, Friends Of Feathers Rescue offers learning materials like books and articles which are available at our site. We also can recommend excellent web sites and Internet chat boards that offer excellent information and are moderated by knowledgeable people.

Friends Of Feathers Rescue will always welcome questions and offer help and counseling to anyone that has adopted one of our birds. We will do our best to help the adopter and their new bird develop a loving, happy relationship.

PARROTS AS PETS, YOU DECIDE

Whether captured in the wild or born in captivity, parrots are not domesticated animals like cats and dogs. They are still wild animals.
Their natural curiosity, sensitivity, intellect, playfulness, and ability to form bonds with humans can tempt people to keep them in captivity.

Unfortunately, the traits that make parrots so intriguing are the same ones that make them extremely difficult to live with as companion animals.
Many parrots find themselves displaced as their natural behaviors and needs clash with human expectations.

“In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we
understand, we will understand only what we are taught.”
